Angled Surface Mounts

The plug almost never fails. The termination behind it does.

Mount an Anderson plug straight out of a flat wall and the lead leaves at ninety degrees, standing proud of the panel with nothing supporting it. Every time a jerry can, a drawer or a knee catches that lead, the strain goes straight into the crimp behind the housing. Do that a few hundred times over a couple of seasons and you have an intermittent connection that only shows up over corrugations, which is the worst kind to chase.

An angled surface mount changes the geometry. The housing sits at an angle so the cable exits downward or along the wall rather than out from it. The lead runs closer to the surface, out of the path of gear moving in and out, and water runs off the contact face instead of sitting in it.

They bolt to the outside of a canopy, a toolbox or a camper wall and need only a cable pass-through rather than a full rectangular cut-out, which makes them the easier retrofit when the build is already finished. Most take a standard 50A Anderson housing.

Two things worth thinking about before you drill. Mount it where you can actually reach it with a panel deployed and a lead plugged in, not just where it looks tidy on an empty wall. And put it below any lip or rail that sheds water rather than above it, so the housing is not sitting in the run-off every time it rains.

Get the position right and it is the last time you think about it.

For fitting three Anderson outlets into a canopy wall, drawer face or vehicle panel, to power a fridge, take a solar input or provide a charging point.
