The primary difference is the angle and distance of the light produced. A spot beam focuses the light into a narrow path to achieve maximum reach, making it ideal for high speed driving where you need to see hazards deep in the distance. A flood beam spreads the light across a much broader area, which provides better visibility around the immediate perimeter of your vehicle or campsite.

Choosing the right pattern depends on how you use your lights. Many travelers prefer a combination of both to create a complete field of view. A focused beam handles navigation on open roads, while a wide beam is more practical for technical off road tracks or setting up your basecamp after dark. Selecting the correct beam for your environment helps improve safety and reduces eye strain during long nights on the road.

Work lights provide a broad, close-range spread for stationary tasks, while driving lights focus on long-distance projection to pick out hazards on the road. Driving lights are typically integrated with your high beam circuit and prioritize "reach" to help you spot wildlife or track conditions well in advance. Work lights are usually switched independently and are mounted to the sides or rear of a rig to illuminate a campsite or a technical repair area.

Using the correct light for the task improves safety and reduces eye strain by providing the right volume of light exactly where it is required. Driving lights are often designed with more aerodynamic housings to handle the wind resistance of highway travel. You do not need a dual battery system to run LED camping lights because their current draw is extremely low. Most individual units draw less than one amp per hour, which a healthy starting battery can typically handle for short periods without issue.

The risk happens when you use your lights for many hours or alongside other gear like a 12V fridge. To prevent a flat starter battery, most travelers choose to install a secondary power source dedicated to running all campsite accessories. You can explore our selection of dual battery systems to find a setup that provides more confidence while you are off grid.

Using orange or amber LED lights significantly reduces the number of insects attracted to your campsite. Most bugs are highly sensitive to the shorter wavelengths found in cool white or blue light, whereas the warmer amber spectrum is much less visible to them. This makes amber lighting a practical choice for keeping moths and flies away from your cooking and dining areas after dark.

Many travelers prefer "tri-colour" LED units that allow you to switch between bright white for tasks and amber for a more relaxed, bug-free evening. This versatility helps you maintain a functional camp without the constant irritation of swarming insects around your face or food. To gain better control over your lighting modes and brightness, you can browse our range of LED lighting accessories for compatible dimmers and wireless switches.

Yes, LED lights are ideal for internal caravan or camper trailer use due to their efficiency and low profile design. Unlike traditional globes, they produce very little heat, which is a major advantage in small living spaces where managing cabin temperature is a priority. This low heat output also makes them much safer for mounting inside cabinetry or near bedding areas.

Most fit outs utilize recessed downlights for main overhead illumination to maintain headroom, while flexible strip lighting is perfect for cupboards and storage zones. These units are designed to handle the vibration of travel and provide consistent light without the flickering common in older systems. Selecting high quality internal lighting is a practical way to improve the usability and comfort of your rig during long distance touring.

No, 12V LED lights are exceptionally efficient and draw very little current compared to traditional halogen or incandescent globes. Most individual camp lights draw between 0.5 and 1 amp per hour, which means you can run several units for an entire evening with minimal impact on your total energy storage.

This low consumption allows you to maintain a well lit campsite without the constant worry of a flat battery. Even with an extensive lighting setup, the total power used is usually small enough to be easily replaced by your solar panels the following day.
