PWM Solar Controllers

The simpler regulator, and often the right one. Suits smaller panels over short runs where an MPPT would be more than you need.

About PWM Solar Controllers

A PWM regulator is the simpler of the two controller types, and for a lot of 12V setups it is the right one.

It works by switching the panel to the battery in rapid pulses, so the panel runs at roughly battery voltage rather than at the voltage where it would make the most power. The energy that difference represents is mostly never generated, rather than burned off; the controller has its own small losses on top. On a 12V nominal panel charging a 12V battery over a short run, the gap is small enough to be hard to notice.

So the question is whether your setup is one where the gap opens up. Higher panel voltage, panels in series, cold weather, low light and long cable runs all widen it. If none of those describe your rig, a PWM will do the job and you can spend the difference somewhere it matters more. The comparison depends on the configuration, not the chemistry.

What does matter, whichever you choose, is that the regulator is rated above the panel's short circuit current and supports the charge profile your battery actually wants. A cheap unit that holds the wrong float voltage will cost you far more than the money it saved.

PWM Solar Controllers FAQs

PWM vs MPPT solar controller: Which is better for camping?

The choice depends on your budget and how much power you need to harvest. A PWM controller is an affordable and reliable option for smaller, basic setups where the solar panel voltage closely matches the battery voltage. They are simple, durable, and effective for maintaining a charge on a single battery system.

For larger systems or when you need maximum efficiency, an MPPT controller is superior because it can harvest up to 30 percent more energy from the same sunlight. While PWM is great for weekend trips and smaller panels, travelers with larger power demands or permanent roof mounts often prefer the extra performance of an MPPT unit.

Why are PWM solar controllers cheaper than MPPT?

PWM controllers are more affordable because they use simpler, established technology to manage battery charging. Instead of the complex DC to DC conversion used in higher end models, a PWM unit acts as a basic electronic switch that connects the panel directly to the battery.

This straightforward design requires fewer internal components and less processing power, which lowers the manufacturing cost. While they lack the maximum energy harvest of more advanced units, they are a practical choice for smaller portable panels or basic 12V setups. They perform best when the solar panel voltage is already close to the required battery charge voltage.

What size PWM solar controller do I need for my 12V setup?

Sizing a PWM controller depends on the maximum amperage your solar panels produce. To find the correct rating, divide the total wattage of your panels by roughly 12 and add a 25 percent safety margin to handle peak output.

A 20A controller is a common choice for panels up to 200W, while larger portable panels or multiple fixed panels will require a 30A or 40A unit. It is important to avoid overloading the controller, as pushing it beyond its rated limit can cause excess heat or internal damage. Selecting a controller with a slightly higher rating than your calculated peak provides a buffer for those cold, clear mornings when solar efficiency is at its highest.

Matching your controller to your input is the key to a consistent system. Explore our 12V Solar Panels to find your panel specs, or check out our Solar Cables & Leads to finish your installation.

Can I use a PWM solar controller with a Lithium (LiFePO4) battery?

PWM solar controllers are compatible with Lithium batteries as long as the unit features a dedicated lithium charging profile. Unlike traditional lead acid batteries, lithium cells require precise voltage control and must stay clear of equalization stages that can trigger a shutdown in the internal battery management system.

Using a controller with the correct profile means the charging process stops exactly when the battery is full. This prevents unnecessary stress on the cells and helps maintain the long service life of your power storage. If your current PWM regulator lacks a specific lithium mode, upgrading to a compatible unit is a smart move to protect your investment.
