About Glass Solar Panels
There is a reason a framed panel stands off the roof rather than sitting flat against it, and it is not only about the mounting.
Solar cells lose output as they warm up. A dark caravan roof in February runs well above ambient, and a panel bonded straight onto it has nowhere to shed that heat. Lift the same cells a few millimetres so air can move underneath and they hold much closer to what they were rated for. It is an unglamorous detail that shows up as amps.
That gap is part of what you are buying. Monocrystalline cells behind tempered glass in an aluminium frame is the oldest format in camping solar panels, and still the one returning the most per dollar over the longest life. Flexible solar panels earn their place where a roof curves, but on a flat surface glass wins on output.
The trade is commitment. Once it is bonded or bolted it is part of the vehicle, so the bracket and adhesive deserve as much thought as the panel did. Roam Gear's own glass panels are drilled with more mounting points than most fixed panels carry, so the brackets can sit where the roof wants them. Those panels are backed by a ten year warranty, which is a fair thing to ask of something you fix down for good.
On a caravan roof that is one careful afternoon, and you stop thinking about it entirely.
