About Aluminium Mounting Brackets

A bolted bracket can be undone. A bonded one cannot, not without a cutting wire, an afternoon and a fair bit of patience.

That matters more than people expect. Panels get upgraded. Vans get sold. A canopy gets rebuilt and the whole layout changes. If there is any chance the panel on the roof today is not the panel that will be there in five years, being able to unbolt it is worth something.

Aluminium brackets are also the answer when the load is past what a bonded plastic bracket should be carrying. Larger panels, a rack rather than a roof skin, or a rig that spends real time on washouts and corrugations. Bolting into a rack rail or a reinforced section gives you the strongest fix available.

One thing to watch on the coast. Anodised or powder coated aluminium against a steel rack or a steel fastener wants a barrier between the two. Dissimilar metals plus salt air corrode faster than either would alone, and it happens out of sight under the bracket foot where nobody is looking.

If you are bolting through a roof rather than into a rack, seal the fixing on its own merits. A bracket footprint is not a seal.

FAQs

Aluminium Mounting Brackets FAQs

Aluminium vs steel solar panel brackets: What is the difference?

Aluminium is the preferred choice for off grid travel because it naturally resists corrosion and rust, particularly in coastal environments. Steel brackets are often heavier and can begin to rust at the mounting points if the protective finish is scratched or chipped during installation.

Using aluminium keeps the total weight down on your roof racks while providing a solid fix that handles the constant vibrations of corrugated outback tracks. It is a long term choice that avoids the maintenance issues associated with steel in harsh Australian conditions.

Can these aluminium brackets be used with any brand of rigid solar panel?

These aluminium brackets are designed to be universal and work with almost any rigid solar panel featuring a standard aluminium frame. The pre drilled holes in the brackets usually align with the factory mounting holes on the panel frame, though you can easily drill new ones for a custom fit.

This versatility makes them a practical choice for securing your power source to a variety of surfaces. Using a universal bracket allows you to mix and match hardware without worrying about brand specific compatibility. It is a straightforward way to keep your setup flexible as your needs change.

How many aluminium brackets do I need for a large solar panel?

A set of four brackets is usually sufficient to secure the corners for a standard solar panel under 100W. If you are mounting a larger unit, such as a 160W or 200W panel, adding two extra side brackets is a smart move to prevent the frame from flexing in high winds or during off road travel.

Extra support points help distribute the wind load and reduce the stress on individual fasteners. This is a practical way to maintain a secure setup on long outback hauls where constant vibration is a factor. Keeping the panel stable helps protect the glass and internal cells from damage over time.

How do I mount aluminium solar brackets to a 4WD roof rack?

Mounting to a 4WD roof rack involves bolting the brackets directly through the rack mesh or rails using stainless steel hardware. Most platform style racks have T slots or channels that allow for a clean installation without needing to drill into the rack itself.

This creates a mechanical connection that is highly resistant to shaking loose on corrugated roads. Always make sure there is an air gap beneath the panel to allow for cooling. Proper airflow beneath the cells helps maintain charging performance even during the peak of a hot Australian afternoon.
