About LED Lighting Leads

The lead is the reason the light can be where you want it.

A camp light kit comes with one lead, at one length, chosen for the average vehicle and the average job. Then the light needs to be over the table, and the table is not where the kit expected it. Or the strip has to run around a corner of the awning. Or a second light needs to hang off the first without a second run to the battery. In every case the kit is right and the lead is short.

The extension cables here fix that at the common lengths. A splitter takes one feed and gives two lights their own lead. A kit bundles the lengths that get used together, so the box has whichever one the layout turns out to need.

All of them use the same four-pin plug the lights use, so any lead connects to any light and any dimmer in the range. Nothing has to be made up, and nothing has to be crimped in the dark.

Measure the run before buying. A lead a metre too long is a coil on the ground. One a metre too short is a light that is not where it was meant to be.

FAQs

LED Lighting Leads FAQs

Can I connect LED lights directly to a 12V battery?

You can connect LED lights directly to a 12V battery, provided you install an inline fuse and a switch on the positive line. Most LED gear is designed for 12V power, so the voltage matches the battery output. A fuse protects your wiring from short circuits, while a switch allows you to turn the light on and off as needed.

Placing the fuse as close to the battery terminal as possible is the best way to maintain safety. This setup is common for simple camp lights or temporary gear. Explore our range of LED Lights to see compatible gear, or find a power source in our AGM Deep Cycle Batteries collection.

What gauge wire should I use for 12V LED lights?

Most standard 12V LED setups require 3mm or 4mm automotive wire. Because LED lights draw very little current, these thin gauges handle the load over common distances without significant voltage drop.

If you are running high power light bars or floodlights over a distance greater than five metres, stepping up to a slightly thicker wire is a smart move. Using the correct gauge keeps your installation tidy and reduces bulk in your wiring harnesses. Find the right components for your harness in our LED Lighting Accessories range.

Are these LED lighting leads UV-rated and waterproof for exterior use?

Our LED lighting leads are designed for outdoor use and feature UV stable insulation and waterproof connectors. The outer sheath is built to handle exposure to the sun and rain without becoming brittle or cracking.

Most leads use a double insulated design to provide extra protection against rubbing and abrasions on roof racks or in canopy mounts. This makes them a durable choice for external camp lighting and vehicle work lights. Explore our range of accessories to find more weather resistant hardware for your rig.
