About Slimline Batteries

A slimline battery is the same chemistry in a shape that fits where a box will not.

Behind a seat. Under a false floor in a canopy. Against the wall of a van where there is thirty centimetres of depth and not forty. In a boat where the only flat spot is under the console. Plenty of setups have the amp hours they need on the spec sheet and nowhere to put the battery that carries them, and a standard case is the reason.

Slimline batteries solve that by going long and flat instead of tall and square. The capacity is the same, the chemistry is lithium, and the management system, the Bluetooth and the charging profile are all as they would be in a conventional case. What changes is that the battery disappears into a space that was otherwise wasted.

They suit builds where the battery is a permanent part of the vehicle rather than something lifted in and out. Mount them properly, keep the terminals accessible for the day something needs checking, and size the cable for the run, because a battery tucked out of the way usually means a longer run to the charger.

Capacities go well past what a single conventional battery would carry, so a flat pack can hold what would otherwise take two boxes.

FAQs

Slimline Batteries FAQs

Can you mount a slimline battery behind the rear seat of a dual cab ute?

Yes, you can mount a slimline battery behind the rear seat of a dual cab ute. These batteries are specifically engineered for shallow spaces where a standard square battery would not fit. This is a common setup for popular Australian utes like the Hilux, Ranger, or D-Max, as it keeps your tray or canopy free for gear while putting the battery in a protected location.

Most slimline units are less than 110mm thick, which allows them to slide into the narrow gap behind the folding seat back. This setup keeps the weight central and low in the vehicle while protecting the battery from the elements and high engine bay temperatures.

Are lithium slimline batteries safe inside the vehicle cabin?

Lithium slimline batteries are safe to install inside a vehicle cabin because they do not release harmful gases during the charging or discharging process. Most modern lithium batteries use LiFePO4 chemistry, which is inherently stable and completely sealed. This makes them a much safer choice for internal storage compared to traditional flooded batteries that require external venting.

Because there is no risk of acid leaks or toxic fumes, you can install them behind seats or inside storage compartments without specialized ventilation. This gives you more flexibility in your build while keeping the cabin air clean for you and your passengers.

Slimline vs standard lithium battery: Is there a performance difference?

There is typically no performance difference between a slimline lithium battery and a standard shaped unit. Both use the same internal cell technology and battery management systems. The only real difference is the physical layout of the cells, which are arranged in a long and thin configuration to fit tighter spaces without sacrificing storage capacity or discharge speed.

A 100Ah slimline battery will provide the same usable power as a 100Ah standard battery and can handle the same loads for your fridge, lights, or inverter. This means you can choose the shape that best fits your vehicle without worrying about losing any power or efficiency.

Do slimline batteries come in higher capacities like 200Ah or 300Ah?

Slimline batteries are available in higher capacities such as 200Ah. While the 100Ah or 110Ah models are the most common for fitting behind seats, the 200Ah slimline versions provide double the runtime for those with more demanding power needs like running an induction cooktop or a large upright fridge.

These higher capacity models are longer in size, so you must check your available width before choosing one for your build. While 300Ah slimline units are less common due to their physical length, a 200Ah unit is often the perfect solution for travelers who want maximum storage without losing valuable canopy space.
