About LED Wiring Harnesses & Adaptors

Every camp light in this range runs on the same orange four-pin plug. That is a quieter advantage than it sounds, because it means any light in the range connects to any other, and the leads to join them are standard rather than something you have to make up.

These are those leads. Extension cables in the lengths that get a light from where the power is to where it needs to be. A splitter for running a second light off the same feed. And kits that bundle the common lengths together.

The practical use is more common than it sounds. The light bar wants to be over the table but the power is behind the seat. The awning strip needs to reach around a corner. A second string of camp lights needs to hang off the first without running a new lead to the battery. In every case the answer is a lead rather than a rewire.

One thing worth knowing. The four-pin plug is proprietary, so these leads suit lights and dimmers on the same system. For anything else in the store, look at the 12V accessories range.

FAQs

LED Wiring Harnesses & Adaptors FAQs

Why should I use a relay and harness instead of wiring my lights directly to a switch?

Relays allow a low current switch to trigger a much larger flow of power from the battery. Using a dedicated harness prevents high current from passing directly through your dashboard switch, which reduces the risk of the switch melting or failing.

This setup also minimizes voltage drop by providing a short and thick path for electricity to reach your lights. It is a safe way to connect high draw gear like large driving lights. Using the right wiring protects your vehicle and helps your accessories perform at their peak.

Are these wiring harnesses universal or brand-specific?

Most LED wiring harnesses are universal and work with any 12V lighting setup. The main factor to check is the connector type. Some lights use DT plugs while higher power bars require heavy duty DTP connectors.

Choosing a harness that matches the amperage of your lights is important for safe operation. A pre made loom simplifies the build by providing the correct relay and fuse in a single package. This allows you to focus on the mounting and positioning of your gear.

Do I need to cut any factory wires to install an LED wiring harness?

Installing a modern LED harness usually does not require cutting any factory wires. Most kits use specialized piggy back adaptors that plug directly into your existing headlight connectors to pick up a trigger signal.

This approach maintains the integrity of your vehicle wiring and makes the installation much faster. It also allows you to return the vehicle to standard easily if needed. Using these adaptors is a practical move for DIY builders wanting a clean and safe finish.

Do LED driving lights have to be wired to the high beam switch?

Australian Design Rules require that driving lights are wired so they only operate when your vehicle high beam headlights are turned on. You must also include an isolation switch within the cabin that allows you to disable the driving lights while still using your standard high beams.

This legal requirement helps prevent blinding other road users. Most pre made harnesses are designed with this circuit logic built in. Following these rules helps you stay compliant while providing better visibility on dark tracks.
