About Standard Battery Boxes

A standard battery box does one job and does not pretend to do more. It keeps the battery in, keeps the weather out, and gives you a lid to lift when something needs checking.

That is the right answer more often than the pre-wired options make it look. If the battery is being wired into a system that already has its own fuse block, its own outlets and its own charger, the box does not need any of that in the lid. It needs to be sturdy, vented, sized to the battery, and strapped down so it stays where it was put.

Venting matters more than it looks. Ventilation needs depend on the battery: sealed AGM batteries can still vent under fault or overcharge, and lithium batteries carry electronics that are happier with airflow. Follow the battery manufacturer's ventilation and orientation guidance and give the box a way to breathe.

The lid is the other thing. Removable beats hinged for access, and a strap that holds the lid down under vibration is the difference between a lid that is there in the morning and one that is somewhere on the track.

Check the internal dimensions against the battery case before ordering, and check how the battery is meant to be secured inside the box. The battery should not be free to move, and the box should be strapped down so it stays where it was put. Measure your battery, not its nominal capacity.

FAQs

Standard Battery Boxes FAQs

Can you put a lithium battery in a standard 12V battery box?

Yes, you can put a lithium battery in a standard 12V battery box, provided the physical dimensions of the battery match the internal space of the box. Most lithium units are sized to match the group 24 or 27 footprints of traditional batteries, making them a straightforward fit for most standard portable housings.

Using a box is a smart way to protect your investment from knocks and dust, especially when you are moving the battery between your vehicle and the campsite. Because lithium batteries are significantly lighter than lead acid units, a standard plastic box is more than strong enough to handle the weight.

Do 12V battery boxes need to be vented?

Venting is a critical safety feature for a battery box, especially if you are using traditional flooded or AGM batteries. While these batteries are typically sealed, they can release small amounts of gas if they are overcharged or if the charging system develops a fault. Proper venting allows these gases to escape, preventing a dangerous buildup in an enclosed space.

Even if you are using a lithium battery that does not gas, a vented box helps manage internal heat buildup during heavy use. For most setups, a standard box with integrated vents or a lid that allows for natural air movement is enough to keep your system safe.

Explore our AGM Deep Cycle Batteries to see which units require more airflow, or find a smart regulator in our DCDC Chargers collection to prevent overcharging.

Are plastic camping battery boxes waterproof?

Standard plastic battery boxes are generally weather resistant rather than fully waterproof. They are designed to protect your battery from rain, splashes, and road spray, but they are not built to be submerged or to handle persistent heavy pressure from a hose.

Most boxes feature a lid that overlaps the base to shed water, which is perfect for use in a ute tray or a caravan A-frame. To maintain the protection, ensure any external connections like Anderson plugs have proper dust covers or are positioned in a way that prevents water from pooling inside the terminals.

Check out our selection of Anderson Plugs with protective covers, or see our Solar Cables & Leads for watertight entry options.

How do I securely mount a battery box in a ute tray or canopy?

The best way to secure a battery box is by using a dedicated mounting tray or heavy duty cam buckle straps. A loose battery bouncing around in a ute tray can lead to damaged terminals, short circuits, or a complete failure of your power system on rough corrugated tracks.

Most boxes come with integrated strap points that allow you to lock them down to your vehicle floor or a drawer system. For a more permanent and secure fit, bolting a metal tray directly to the canopy floor and strapping the box into it provides the best stability. This keeps the weight low and fixed, ensuring your connections stay solid even when navigating washouts and rocky creek crossings.
