About Battery Trays

Two kinds of tray, for two different jobs: holding a bare battery where a box will not fit, and holding a battery box down where it lives.

Under a bonnet, inside a drawer system, on a shelf in a canopy, the battery often has a home already and just needs to be held in it. A box adds height, width and a lid to lift. A tray adds a base, a pair of clamps and a strap, and the battery sits exactly where it was going to sit anyway, now bolted to something.

Each comes with its own restraint. The bare-battery trays use clamps that land on the case edge, which stops the battery creeping as well as lifting. The box mounting trays use the straps the box maker supplies for them, sized to that box. Use the restraint the tray was designed with rather than improvising one.

Fit is model specific on both. The battery trays are sized to particular case dimensions, and a lithium case is usually a different shape to an AGM of the same capacity, so match the tray to the exact battery. The box trays match a specific box, original or Pro, and are not interchangeable.

Bolt the tray to structure, not to panel board. The tray is only as good as what it is fixed to.

Battery Trays FAQs

What is the difference between a vehicle-specific and a universal battery tray?

Vehicle specific trays are designed to bolt into the factory mounting points found in the engine bay or tub of a particular 4WD. Universal trays feature a flat base with various pre drilled holes, allowing them to be mounted in custom locations such as inside a canopy, a caravan storage box, or a camper trailer.

Choosing a tray that matches your vehicle saves time during the fit out because it clears existing engine components and requires no custom fabrication. Universal trays offer more flexibility for those building a bespoke system where space is at a premium. Both styles provide a solid foundation for your auxiliary storage by keeping the battery fixed and secure.

What size battery tray do I need for a 100Ah battery?

A standard twelve inch tray is the most common size for a 100Ah lead acid or AGM battery. Most of these units follow a standard case size that fits neatly into a tray measuring approximately 300mm to 330mm in length.

If you are using a lithium battery, these are often more compact than traditional options and will fit easily with extra room for wiring. Always double check the physical length and width of your specific battery before choosing a tray, as some slimline or high capacity models may require a different footprint. Keeping the battery fixed in a correctly sized tray prevents movement that can damage terminals or wiring when traveling over corrugated outback tracks.

How do I mount a battery tray in an aluminium ute canopy?

The most secure way to mount a battery tray in an aluminium canopy is by bolting it directly to the structural frame or the canopy floor using large load spreading washers. Because aluminium can flex more than steel, using a backing plate beneath the floor helps distribute the weight of the battery and prevents the metal from cracking over time due to vibration.

It is best to position the tray as low as possible and away from high heat sources like the vehicle exhaust or direct engine bay vents. Once the tray is bolted in place, ensure the battery is locked down with heavy duty straps to prevent any movement while navigating rough corrugated tracks. This professional approach keeps your power source stable and protects your canopy from structural damage during long outback hauls.

Do battery trays come with tie-down straps or mounting brackets?

Most universal battery trays include the basic mounting hardware and a hold down strap needed for a standard installation. Vehicle specific trays often come with specialized brackets designed to align with factory mounting points, while universal models provide a simple strap and buckle system to keep the battery in place.

It is wise to check the product description for each tray, as some heavy duty versions might require separate tie down kits or specific bolts depending on if you are mounting to a chassis or a canopy floor. Securing your battery with a solid mechanical connection is a critical step for preventing physical damage during off road travel. This keeps your power source stable and protects your wiring from being pulled or strained on rough tracks.
