About Ensuite Awnings

Privacy is the last thing a campsite gives you.

Shade comes with the first awning. Shelter comes with the tent. Sleep sorts itself out once the bed is level. What takes longer is the thing nobody mentions when they are planning the trip: somewhere to wash and somewhere to use the toilet without either an audience or a walk in the dark.

That gap is usually what decides whether the fourth night becomes a fifth. A camp where you can stand under warm water at the end of a dusty day is a camp people are happy to stay in. A camp where the shower is a bottle behind the tailgate is one they start planning to leave.

An ensuite awning is a wall around that problem. It hangs off the vehicle like any other awning, but instead of shade it gives you a private enclosed space, floor to head height, with somewhere to hang the shower bag and put the porta potti. Single or double, depending on how many of you there are and whether you want a shower cubicle and a toilet cubicle side by side.

They mount to a roof rack or an awning rail, and pack down small enough that leaving it at home is never the reason you did not bring it.

FAQs

Ensuite Awnings FAQs

How long does it take to set up and pack away a vehicle-mounted ensuite?

A vehicle mounted ensuite typically takes less than 30 seconds to set up or pack away. Most designs feature a simple drop down mechanism where you unroll the bag and allow the frame to swing out, creating an instant private cubicle for showering or changing.

This speed is a major advantage compared to traditional pop up ground tents that require pegs and poles. The frame remains attached to your rig, which means you can have a private space ready even during a quick roadside stop. Packing away is just as fast, as the fabric simply folds back into the protective travel bag on your roof rack.

Can an ensuite awning be mounted to any roof rack or rooftop tent?

Yes, ensuite awnings can be mounted to almost any roof rack, platform, or hard shell rooftop tent. They use a universal L bracket system that bolts into the accessory channels found on most modern touring setups. This allows for a secure and stable fix that handles the vibration of off road travel.

If you are mounting to a tent, many hard shell models feature built in rails that accept these brackets directly. This integration helps keep your setup compact and professional. For those with platform racks, the brackets can be positioned anywhere along the side or rear to suit your preferred layout.

Which side of the 4WD should I mount a shower awning?

It is best to mount your shower ensuite on the opposite side of your main living awning. This keeps your wet area separate from your kitchen and social zone, preventing water from running into your main campsite or soaking your ground mat. Most travelers choose the driver side for the shower if their main awning is on the passenger side.

You should also consider the location of your water source. If your tank and pump are at the rear of the vehicle, mounting the ensuite near the back corner makes it easier to route your shower hose. Adding a light inside the cubicle is a practical move for evening use. Check out our LED Camping Light Kits for portable lighting options that work well in ensuite setups.
