About 12V Light Switches

The light switch is the one in the setup you use in the dark.

That changes what it needs to be. Every other switch gets found by sight. The light switch gets found by feel, at two in the morning, with one hand, before the light is on. So it wants to be where a hand goes naturally, at the height a hand reaches from the bed or the door, with a shape or a glow that says which one it is.

The switches here cover that. Round toggles with a built-in indicator that shows in the dark. Single flush panels that put one switch in a wall at the right height. Multi-panels for the spot by the door where the lights are switched alongside everything else.

Dimmers sit in the same collection, because the light that is right for cooking is wrong for reading, and a dimmer is what lets one light do both. Wireless remotes take that further, so the light gets turned off from the bed rather than from the door.

Rate the switch above the draw of the lights it controls, and wire through a fuse. Then put it where a hand will find it without thinking, because that is the only test that matters.

FAQs

12V Light Switches FAQs

What is the difference between rocker switches and toggle switches for 12V lighting?

Rocker switches feature a wide flat surface that you tilt whereas toggle switches use a projecting lever that you flick up or down. Rockers are popular for internal walls and canopy surfaces because they sit lower and are less likely to be bumped by sliding gear or storage boxes.

Toggle switches provide a positive mechanical feel and are often chosen for custom dash or control board builds where a classic look is preferred. Both styles perform the same electrical task of opening or closing a circuit for your accessories. Selecting the style that fits your mounting space and tactile preference is the best approach.

Explore our LED Lights to find gear for these circuits, or browse our 12V Switch Panels for integrated mounting options.

How many amps can a standard 12V light switch handle before I need a relay?

Most standard 12V light switches handle between 15 and 20 amps. If your lighting array or accessory draws more than 15 amps, you should use a relay to protect the switch from overheating and potential failure.

Using a relay allows a low current switch to trigger a much larger load safely. This setup is common for high power light bars or large sets of driving lights that draw significant current. For most single LED camp lights or interior strips, a direct switch connection is sufficient. Matching your hardware to the actual load prevents melted components and keeps your system functional.

Check our LED Lighting Accessories for relays, or explore Circuit Breakers & Fuses to safeguard your wiring.

What size wire do I need for a 12V LED camp light switch?

Use 3mm or 4mm automotive wire for standard 12V LED camp light switches. Because LED gear draws very little current, these gauges handle the load without significant voltage drop over short distances.

Using thicker wire than required often adds unnecessary bulk to your harness and makes it difficult to fit terminals into small switch spaces. You should calculate the total draw of your setup to confirm the gauge matches the circuit fuse. This approach keeps your installation tidy and efficient while preventing excessive resistance in your lighting circuits.

Are the light switches illuminated so they are easy to find in the dark?

Many rocker and toggle switches include built in LEDs that illuminate when the circuit is active or provide a faint glow for visibility in the dark. These illuminated models are a smart move for canopy or dash setups where finding controls at night is difficult.

Some designs allow you to wire the illumination directly to your park lights so they only glow when your vehicle lights are on. This keeps your campsite controls easy to locate without constantly draining your house battery. Providing a visual signal for active circuits also helps you manage your power usage more effectively.
