About Square Awnings

A square awning is the format for when there is nowhere for a wrap-around to swing.

A 180 or a 270 needs room to pivot out from the vehicle, which assumes a clear corner and a roof long enough to mount it. Plenty of setups do not have that. A van with a sliding door on the awning side. A shorter wagon. A rack already carrying a tent that leaves a metre of rail free. A trailer with a low roofline. On those, a straight side awning is often the format that fits.

It extends straight out from the vehicle side and stops, giving a covered strip along the side of the vehicle. The stocked awning stands on two spigot Twistlock legs. Check the rail or rack against the awning's mounting requirements before ordering; a straight side awning still needs a mount it can bolt to.

The square awning here carries built-in RGB lighting under the canvas, which makes it the one part of the setup you do not need to light separately.

FAQs

Square Awnings FAQs

2x2.5m vs 2.5x2.5m awning: What size fits a dual cab ute?

Choose a 2m by 2.5m awning if you want a neat fit on a dual cab ute roof rack. This specific length typically aligns with the roofline of modern utes and prevents the awning housing from overhanging the windscreen. A 2.5m by 2.5m model provides a larger shade area, but it often requires a full length rack or a canopy for proper support along the extra span.

Selecting the size that matches your rack prevents wind noise and keeps your rig compact for tight tracks. It also makes the installation process much easier because the mounting points are better supported. Check out our Awning Mounting Brackets to find the right hardware for your ute roof rack or canopy.

Can I set up a standard pull-out 4x4 awning by myself?

Setting up a side awning on your own is straightforward once you get the technique right. Start by unzipping the protective bag and releasing the primary support straps. You can then support the leading edge of the awning while you swing out the horizontal side arms and lock them into the front bar.

Walking the awning out slowly prevents the internal frame from twisting. Once the horizontal arms are set, you can drop the vertical legs to the height you need. Practicing this at home before you head out helps you get the job done in minutes, even when you are camping solo. This allows you to get your shade sorted quickly so you can focus on the rest of your camp setup.

How do I prevent my awning from being damaged in heavy rain or wind?

Prevent water from pooling on the canvas by setting one support pole lower than the other to create a natural fall. This creates a steep angle that helps rain run off immediately. If water is allowed to collect on the roof, the weight can quickly stretch the fabric or bend the internal arms.

When the wind picks up, you must use heavy duty tie downs and support poles. Even a light breeze can turn a side awning into a sail, which puts massive stress on your roof rack brackets. Using Awning Ratchet Straps provides a secure fix that holds firm during sudden weather changes. You can also add extra Awning Poles for better stability in breezy conditions.

Can you attach an enclosed tent to a standard pull-out awning?

Enclosing your side awning is a practical way to create a private room or a bug proof living area. Most standard pull out awnings feature a sail track on the front and sides that accepts wall kits or a complete annex room. This setup is a smart move for longer stays where you need extra protection from rain and wind.

Adding a room transforms your shade into a functional sleeping or storage zone. This helps keep your campsite organized and provides more comfort for the whole crew. Explore our Camping Gear to find more shelter options, or see our LED Awning Light Kits to illuminate your new living space.
