About Rooftop Tent Solar Panels

A standard solar panel frame is too deep to live on a tent lid that folds. These are built thin for exactly that reason.

A normal framed panel sits around 35mm deep, which on a roof rack is fine and on a rooftop tent lid is not. The frame fouls the tent when it closes, or sits proud enough to catch wind at highway speed, or pushes the whole assembly past what the roof is rated to carry. So the panel either does not fit or does not stay on.

The Roam Gear Slimline range runs a 20mm frame. That is the whole point of it. Low enough to sit on a tent lid without fouling the fold, light enough not to eat into the roof rating, and still a proper glass panel with monocrystalline cells rather than a flexible laminate that gives up output in heat.

Once it is on, the tent lid becomes the highest flat surface on the vehicle, facing the sky, doing something useful the whole time the vehicle is parked. It is the roof the tent took, given back.

Sizes run to suit how much lid you have to work with. All Roam Gear Slimline panels carry Roam Gear's ten year warranty.

Check the lid dimensions and the tent manufacturer's guidance on load before you order. Some tents are built with a panel in mind and some are not.

FAQs

Rooftop Tent Solar Panels FAQs

Flexible vs rigid solar panel for a rooftop tent: Which is better?

Flexible panels are the preferred choice for those prioritizing weight and aerodynamics. They sit flush against the tent shell and offer a very low profile which reduces wind drag and noise while you drive. Rigid glass panels offer better heat dissipation but add more height and weight to your roof rack setup.

Choosing between them depends on your vehicle roof load limits and your power needs. Flexible units are easy to bond directly to the shell, while rigid panels require specialized mounting brackets to provide an air gap. Both styles help you stay powered for longer when you are parked at camp.

Explore our Flexible Solar Panels for lightweight options or see our Glass Solar Panels for permanent roof mounting.

Will adding a solar panel make my rooftop tent too heavy to open or close?

Adding a solar panel will make the lid heavier but most modern hard shell tents feature struts designed to manage the extra load. A typical glass panel adds about 10 to 12 kilograms to the shell. You might notice a slight change in the opening speed, but the unit should still stay open on its own.

If the tent becomes difficult to lift or fails to stay upright, you can easily upgrade to higher rated gas struts. This is a common modification for travelers who add extra gear to their roof. Providing this extra lift maintains the fast setup speed you expect from a hard shell rig.

Does mounting a solar panel to my rooftop tent make it hotter inside?

Mounting a rigid panel usually helps keep the tent cooler because the air gap beneath the glass acts as a heat shield. This gap prevents the sun from directly hitting the tent shell, which can reduce the internal temperature during the day. Flexible panels are bonded directly to the surface and can transfer more heat into the sleeping area.

To manage this, you should look for panels with high efficiency ratings that perform well in the Australian sun. Using a high performance MPPT Solar Controllers helps you get the most from your roof setup. You can also browse our Ventilation & Cooling range for 12V fans to improve airflow inside the cabin.

What is the best adhesive to stick a flexible solar panel to a rooftop tent?

Use a high strength structural adhesive like Sikaflex 252 or a heavy duty VHB tape. These products provide a permanent bond that can handle highway speeds and the constant vibrations of off road travel. Polyurethane sealants are popular because they remain flexible and do not crack when the tent shell expands or contracts in the heat.

Prepare the surface by cleaning it thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove any red dust or grease. This step is critical for making certain the adhesive sticks properly to the shell material. Find the right wiring to finish your install in our Solar Cables & Leads collection.
