About LED Camping Light Kits

Camp light kits almost never fail at the LED.

They fail at the lead, the clip and the join, because these are the only lights in the setup that get packed and unpacked every single trip. Everything mounted to the vehicle sits still for years. A camp light gets rolled into a bag damp, thrown in a drawer, pulled out in the dark, hung off a rail, tugged sideways when someone walks past the guy rope, and then packed again in a hurry.

So the things worth looking at are the unglamorous ones. Strain relief where the lead enters the light. Connectors that lock rather than push together. Hooks and magnets strong enough to hold in a breeze and not so brittle they snap the first cold morning. A bag that the whole kit actually fits back into.

Beyond that, the useful features are the ones that change how the kit gets used. Colour temperature switching so the same string covers cooking and sitting. A dimmer on the lead so nobody has to unplug lights to dim the camp. Enough lead length to reach from a power source that is never quite where you want it.

Buy for how it packs, not just how it lights.

FAQs

LED Camping Light Kits FAQs

What size LED camp light kits are available for my setup?

Camp light kits are available in several sizes to suit everything from a compact 4WD canopy to a large family camper trailer. Common configurations include two bar, four bar, or six bar sets that provide enough illumination to cover your entire cooking and living area.

Most kits feature modular cables, allowing you to daisy chain the bars together to fit your specific layout. This flexibility is a practical advantage when you need to run light to different zones like your kitchen and sleeping quarters. Choosing a larger kit provides a buffer for wider campsites, while the individual switches allow you to turn off bars you are not using.

Rigid LED light bars vs flexible strip lights: Which is best for camping?

Rigid LED light bars are best for permanent installations where durability is a priority, such as inside a canopy or along a roof rack. They are built to handle the knocks of off road travel and usually feature integrated magnets for easy temporary mounting to metal surfaces.

Flexible strip lights are better for uneven surfaces or where weight is a concern. They are a popular choice for adding ambient lighting inside tents or under awnings because they can be rolled up with the fabric without needing to be removed. Both styles provide excellent light output, so the choice usually depends on whether you prefer a fixed fixture or a lightweight solution.

Do dual-color orange and white LED camping lights actually repel bugs?

Dual colour LED lights do not physically repel bugs, but they are much less likely to attract them. Insects are primarily drawn to the UV and blue light found in standard cool white LEDs. Orange or amber light sits at a different wavelength that is far less visible to most flying pests.

Switching to the orange setting during your evening meal or while relaxing is a smart way to keep your campsite clear of moths and midges. It provides a much more comfortable environment without the need for constant swatting. This feature is a practical addition for anyone camping near water or in humid tropical conditions where bugs are most active.

How long will a 12V LED camping light kit run off a portable battery box?

A standard 12V LED camping light kit will typically run for several days off a portable battery box. Most individual LED bars draw roughly 0.5 to 0.8 amps per hour on full brightness. This means a four bar kit running for four hours an evening consumes only a small fraction of the capacity in a standard 100Ah battery.

Using a dimmer to lower the output will extend this runtime even further. This efficiency allows you to maintain a bright campsite without worrying about your storage levels during a long stay. It is a much more effective solution than older halogen lighting which pulls significantly more power.
