Victron 12/24V SmartSolar MPPT 75/15 Bluetooth Controller (Lithium Compatible)

An MPPT controller is typically 20 to 30 percent more efficient than a standard PWM unit. While a PWM controller simply switches the connection between the panel and battery, an MPPT unit uses a DC to DC converter to constantly track and harvest the maximum power available from your solar array, regardless of voltage differences.

This efficiency becomes especially clear during those hazy mornings, late afternoons, or when panels are partially shaded. By converting excess voltage into extra charging current, an MPPT regulator ensures you get the most out of every sun hour. This extra power is often the difference between your fridge running through the night or your batteries cutting out early.

A 20 amp MPPT controller is the standard recommendation for a 200 watt solar panel. This size provides a safe buffer for those clear, cold mornings when solar panels can actually produce more than their rated output.

To work out the sizing, divide the panel wattage by the lowest charging voltage, which is roughly 12 volts. For a 200 watt panel, this gives you about 16.6 amps. Choosing a 20 amp regulator keeps your system within safe limits while allowing the unit to run efficiently without getting too hot. If you plan to add a second panel later, stepping up to a 40 amp controller now will save you from having to upgrade your hardware down the track.

Yes, MPPT controllers are the preferred choice for Lithium batteries as long as the unit features a dedicated lithium charging profile. Unlike lead acid batteries, lithium cells require constant voltage and current control without the high voltage equalisation stages used for older battery types.

Selecting the lithium mode on your controller tells the device exactly when to stop charging to protect the internal battery management system. This level of precision prevents overcharging and helps you get the longest possible service life from your cells. Using an MPPT regulator with a lithium setup is the most efficient way to maintain a steady charge during remote off grid travel.

Always connect the battery to the MPPT controller first before connecting the solar panels. This specific sequence allows the controller to detect the system voltage and configure its internal settings correctly before it begins receiving power from the sun.

Connecting the panels first can lead to configuration errors or even damage the unit. Once the battery connection is secure, you can link the positive and negative leads from your solar array. It is good practice to install a fuse or circuit breaker between the battery and the controller to protect your wiring from short circuits. Using the correct cable size is also important for reducing voltage drop and maintaining charging performance over long distances.
