Bushwakka Solar Panel Mounting Plates (4 Pieces)

The better choice depends entirely on the mounting surface and how you prefer to fix the panel. Aluminium Z-brackets are the standard for 4WD roof racks or crossbars where you can easily bolt the hardware through the rack mesh or rails. They provide a rock solid mechanical connection and a large air gap for maximum cooling.

ABS corner mounts are preferred for flat surfaces like caravan roofs or aluminium canopies where you want to avoid drilling holes. These brackets provide a wider surface area for adhesive bonding and offer a more aerodynamic, integrated look. While both styles keep your panels secure, ABS mounts are specifically designed to reduce wind noise and prevent leaks on smooth roofs.

No, you do not need to drill holes into your caravan roof to mount solar panels. Using ABS mounting brackets with a high strength structural adhesive creates a secure, permanent bond that is perfectly capable of handling highway speeds and rough tracks.

This drill free method is the preferred choice for modern composite or fibreglass caravan roofs because it maintains the structural integrity of the shell and removes the risk of water leaks around screw holes. To finish the job properly, use a dedicated cable entry gland to route your wiring into the van. This keeps the installation neat and completely watertight.

Mounting a solar panel to 4WD roof racks or crossbars is best done using aluminium brackets or specialized channel nuts. Most modern platform racks feature T slots or channels that allow you to bolt brackets directly into the rail without needing to drill through the rack itself. This creates a secure mechanical connection that can withstand constant vibrations from corrugated outback roads.

When positioning the panel, ensure there is a clear air gap between the panel and the roof of the vehicle. This airflow is vital for keeping the cells cool and maintaining high charging efficiency during hot afternoons. If you have a mesh style platform rack, you can often bolt the brackets directly through the mesh for a flexible layout that leaves room for other gear.

Use a high strength structural adhesive like Sikaflex 252 or a similar polyurethane based sealant for drill free installations. These adhesives are specifically designed to bond ABS or aluminium brackets to various roof surfaces, providing a permanent hold that handles the vibration and wind loads of highway travel.

Surface preparation is the most important part of the process. You must thoroughly clean and degrease both the bracket and the roof with an appropriate primer or cleaner before applying the adhesive. This helps create a strong chemical bond that can withstand the harsh Australian sun and rough outback tracks. Avoid using standard household silicones, as they lack the structural strength required for vehicle mounted gear.
