Roam Gear 5m Anderson to MC4 Solar Extension Lead

A 12V power distribution box acts as the central hub for your electrical system, allowing you to organize and protect multiple circuits from a single location. Instead of running numerous wires directly to your battery terminals, which creates a cluttered and risky setup, a distribution box provides a tidy point to connect your fridge, lights, and USB ports.

Using a dedicated hub simplifies your fit out and makes troubleshooting much faster at camp. If an appliance stops working, you can quickly check the fused output within the box rather than tracing a tangled mess of wiring behind a panel. This approach improves the safety of your build by ensuring every circuit is correctly protected. You can browse our selection of 12V Distribution Boxes to find a compact unit, or explore our complete range of Power Distribution Boxes for larger touring setups.

Yes, you can use a circuit breaker instead of a fuse provided the amperage rating is correct for your cabling. Circuit breakers are a practical choice for main power lines or high current devices because they are resettable. This allows you to restore power once a fault is cleared without needing a replacement part, which is helpful when you are traveling off grid.

Fuses remain better for smaller circuits like LED lights because they react very quickly to electrical faults and fit neatly into a centralized fuse block. Many travelers use a combination of both to create a safe electrical foundation for their vehicle. You can browse our range of Circuit Breakers and Fuses to find the right protection, or look specifically at our Circuit Breakers for your main battery cables.

A voltmeter provides a snapshot of your system, helping you monitor charging from your alternator or solar panels. It acts as a basic guide to see if your battery has enough power to run your accessories. While this is effective for AGM or lead acid batteries where voltage drops as they lose charge, a voltmeter is not an accurate reading for lithium batteries.

Lithium maintains a very flat voltage throughout its discharge, meaning a voltmeter may show a high reading even when the capacity is low. This makes it difficult to judge the true state of charge for lithium cells using voltage alone. Browse our selection of Voltmeters for a simple entry level display, or explore our Battery Monitors for the precision needed to track lithium power levels correctly.

A 12V switch panel allows you to control multiple accessories including internal cabin lighting, LED Lights, 12V fans, and water pumps. These panels centralise your power management, which removes the need to constantly plug and unplug devices from your main battery source. Most switch panels also feature integrated USB ports and cigarette sockets to keep your smaller electronics and navigation gear charged throughout the trip.

By grouping these controls in a single location, you create a much cleaner and more professional fit out in your canopy or van. This organization is helpful when you need to quickly isolate circuits at night or before driving. You can browse our selection of 12V Switch Panels to find a configuration that fits your build, providing easy access to all your campsite comforts.

Angled surface mounts protect your connections by using a downward facing orientation that naturally sheds rain and runoff away from the internal terminals. This design prevents water from pooling inside the plug, which is a common cause of short circuits and corrosion during heavy downpours or when moisture settles overnight.

These mounts typically house Anderson plugs to provide a fixed and weather resistant access point rather than leaving loose wires exposed to the elements. By keeping the connection face shielded, you maintain a cleaner electrical connection and reduce the risk of power failure in humid coastal environments. This setup is particularly effective for canopy walls or boat bulkheads where protection is a priority.

An MC4 connector is a specialized, single contact electrical connector designed specifically for solar panels. It is used to create a watertight and UV resistant link between multiple solar panels or to connect your panels to a solar regulator. These connectors are the industry standard for permanent outdoor mounting because they provide a secure bond that prevents moisture and dust from entering the circuit.

The locking mechanism ensures the connection remains stable while your vehicle is moving or facing high winds on a roof rack. Unlike standard plugs, these are engineered to stay exposed to the elements for years without degrading. Browse our selection of MC4 Connectors to find a match for your installation, or explore our full range of Solar Cable & Accessories to complete your wiring setup.

To make your 12V accessories and connections handle the outback, you must use secure terminations and the correct cable gauge to manage constant vibration and high heat. Professional crimping is preferred over soldering these days, as solder joints can become brittle and crack under the stress of corrugated tracks. This focus on mechanical strength prevents intermittent power loss and reduces the risk of electrical failure when you are far from help.

Organizing your wiring through a distribution hub prevents loose leads from rubbing against sharp metal edges or becoming tangled with your other gear. Using high grade cable with tinned copper construction and heat resistant insulation is also critical for protecting your setup from coastal air and high cabin temperatures. Regularly checking your mounting brackets and terminals for tightness before a trip helps maintain a stable system that performs consistently in the most demanding conditions.
