Rekcharge 1m Solar Cable Extension Lead with 50A Anderson Plugs

Grey and red Anderson plugs are not compatible and will not plug into each other. These connectors feature a mechanical lockout design that only allows plugs of the same color to mate. This is a safety feature used across the 12V industry to prevent different voltages or circuits from being connected accidentally.

Typically, grey plugs are the standard for 12V battery and accessory links. Red plugs are often used for 24V systems or dedicated solar inputs. Matching colors helps you manage your wiring safely and prevents costly mistakes that could damage your electrical components. Always verify the color of your existing sockets before purchasing new plugs for your setup.

A 50A Anderson plug is the standard choice for most DC DC chargers. This size provides a secure connection capable of handling the continuous current required to charge an auxiliary battery without excessive heat buildup. Most portable battery boxes and vehicle side inputs are pre fitted with 50A sockets for this reason.

While larger 175A plugs exist, they are generally reserved for high current jump starting or massive battery banks. Using a 50A connector keeps your setup compact and standard across your accessories. It is a practical move that allows for easy swapping between chargers and solar panels.

Crimping is the preferred method for terminating Anderson plug contacts. A high pressure mechanical crimp creates a cold weld between the copper wire and the terminal, which is much more resistant to vibration than solder. Soldered joints can become brittle and may crack over time when exposed to the constant shaking of off road travel.

A professional crimp also avoids the risk of solder travelling up the wire and making it prone to breaking under stress. This process keeps the connection flexible and secure for years of use in harsh conditions. Using a dedicated tool makes certain the terminal is locked onto the wire properly.

Standard 12V Anderson plugs are weather resistant but not fully waterproof. While the housing handles splashes and rain, the connection face remains open to moisture, salt air, and red dust. Over time, exposure can lead to corrosion on the internal terminals, which reduces electrical conductivity and causes heat buildup.

Using a rubber dust cover or a dedicated protective housing is the best way to shield external connections from the elements. This keeps the contacts clean and ready to use whenever you plug in your gear. For permanent exterior mounting, an angled housing helps shed water naturally.
