Hardkorr 240Ah Lithium Battery Tray with Clamps

A battery box is a fully enclosed housing that provides complete physical protection for your battery against dust, moisture, and impact. A battery tray is an open, rigid frame designed to bolt the battery securely into a fixed position, which is typically required for under bonnet or internal canopy installations.

Boxes are the preferred choice for portable setups where you need to move your power source between your vehicle and the campsite. They often include integrated handles and external power sockets for easy access. Trays are better for permanent builds where space is limited and the battery does not need to be moved. Selecting the right format depends on whether you prioritize mobility or a fixed, space efficient installation for your rig.

A standard battery box is a protective shell designed to house a battery, while a pre wired power hub acts as a complete portable energy station with integrated sockets and management tools. Standard boxes focus on physical protection and usually require you to install your own wiring and outlets.

Power hubs provide immediate access to energy through built in USB ports, cigarette lighter sockets, and high current Anderson plugs. This integrated design removes the need for a complex fit out in your vehicle or camper, as every circuit is already fused and ready for use. Many hubs also include a voltmeter to track your state of charge or a DCDC charger to manage inputs from your alternator and panels. This setup is ideal for those who need a versatile power source that can be shifted between a vehicle, boat, or campsite. To confirm a correct fit, you must compare the physical dimensions of your battery with the internal dimensions specified for the battery box. You should measure the total length, width, and height of the battery, including the terminals, to make sure it sits comfortably within the housing.

While many 100Ah batteries follow standard group sizes, the physical height can vary significantly between different brands and chemistries. It is a smart move to allow for a small amount of extra clearance around the battery to accommodate internal wiring and any circuit breakers you plan to install. You should also verify that the battery cables have a clear path to exit the box without being pinched by the lid. To check the exact measurements for your setup, you can browse our range of 12V Batteries or explore the compact formats available in our Lithium Batteries collection.

Yes, you can charge your battery while it is safely housed inside the box. Most modern battery boxes and power hubs feature external terminals or integrated Anderson plugs, allowing you to connect a charging source without removing the lid.

This setup keeps your battery protected from dust and physical impact while it receives energy from your solar panels or vehicle alternator. If you are using traditional lead acid or AGM batteries, you must ensure the box is located in a well ventilated area to manage the small amount of gas produced during the charging cycle. Lithium batteries do not have this requirement, making them easier to manage in enclosed spaces. To optimize your charging process, explore our range of solar controllers or find a professional DCDC charger to manage the power from your vehicle.

Battery boxes require venting if you are using traditional lead acid or AGM batteries. These chemistries can release small amounts of gas during the charging process, which must be allowed to escape the housing for safety. Most high quality battery boxes include integrated vents or gaps around the lid to manage this gas flow automatically.

If you are using lithium batteries, venting for gas is not a requirement because the cells are sealed and do not produce emissions. However, maintaining some airflow is still a smart move to help manage the heat generated by your battery and charging gear during high current use. Keeping the box in a cool area of your vehicle or canopy helps maintain peak performance for your power system.

Most battery boxes are designed to be weather resistant rather than fully waterproof. They provide a protective shell that shields your battery from rain, sea spray, and outback dust, making them suitable for use in vehicle canopies or near the water while fishing. However, because they require ventilation for certain battery types and have entry points for wiring, they should not be submerged.

To maintain the stability of your setup, you should use plugs and connectors that feature weatherproof covers. This addition helps prevent moisture and grit from entering the power sockets when they are not in use. Browse our selection of Anderson plugs to find specialized weather resistant connections for your portable power system.

To securely mount a battery box or tray for off road use, you must use high strength straps or direct bolt down hardware that prevents the battery from shifting on corrugated tracks. This physical security protects the internal battery plates and your wiring from the stress caused by heavy vibrations and bumps. For permanent builds, a rigid tray using steel hold down clamps is the standard choice for engine bays or canopy floors.

If you are using a portable box, a mounting kit with a fixed base plate and heavy duty webbing is the most effective way to keep your setup stable. Regularly checking your fasteners and strap tension during a trip prevents small movements from becoming a safety risk. Browse our range of battery trays for a fixed installation, or explore our collection of lithium deep cycle batteries to find a lightweight power source that puts less stress on your mounting system.
