Outback Tourer 1.5 Pro Rooftop Tent

A rooftop tent is worth the investment if you value quick setup and staying off the ground. These tents allow you to pull into a campsite and have your bed ready in minutes, which is a massive win after a long day behind the wheel. Because you are elevated, you get better airflow during humid nights and stay away from the sand and mud that often comes with ground camping.

The value is found in the convenience of a setup that stays ready to go. Most models include an integrated mattress and enough space to leave your bedding inside, meaning you do not have to wrestle with bulky gear at every stop. If you want to build a complete mobile basecamp, pairing your tent with quality camping gear makes for a much more practical experience.

Many vehicles are not designed to carry the weight of a rooftop tent. You must verify the roof load limit specified by your vehicle manufacturer and check that your roof racks are rated for the weight of the tent. While most large 4WDs or utes with canopy setups handle these loads well, smaller cars often have much lower limits that might only allow for lightweight accessories.

If your vehicle cannot support the weight of a tent, using a car awning paired with a swag is a fantastic alternative. This setup provides reliable shelter and shade without the heavy roof load, keeping your centre of gravity lower for better handling. To make this ground based setup more functional, you can easily integrate high quality 12V LED lights into the awning arms to create a well lit and comfortable living space wherever you pull up.

The dynamic roof load rating is the maximum weight your vehicle can safely carry while it is moving. This figure is the most important one to check when choosing a rooftop tent because it accounts for the forces of braking and cornering. Static load ratings refer to how much weight the roof can support when the vehicle is stationary.

Static ratings are typically much higher than dynamic ratings. This higher limit allows the roof to support the weight of the tent and the people inside it once you are set up for the night. You should always consult your vehicle manual to find these specific figures before mounting a tent to your roof racks.

Rooftop tents are generally much more comfortable than traditional ground tents because they provide a flat and elevated sleeping surface. Most high quality models feature an integrated high density foam mattress that remains inside the tent even when it is folded away. This eliminates the need to carry separate sleeping mats and protects you from the cold or uneven ground that can make sleeping in a swag or ground tent difficult.

Being elevated also allows for superior airflow through large screened windows and doors. This ventilation helps manage temperature and condensation during humid nights or in tropical conditions. To further improve your setup, you can pair your tent with practical camping gear to create a comfortable and well organised basecamp for longer stays.

Rooftop tents are designed to handle strong winds, though performance varies between different styles. Hard shell tents are particularly effective in gusty weather because the rigid top and solid base provide a stable structure that does not flap like traditional canvas models. This creates a much quieter sleeping environment and prevents the fabric from snapping against the frame during a storm.

Positioning your vehicle correctly is the best way to handle high winds. Park so the lowest or most aerodynamic part of the tent faces the wind to reduce resistance and pressure on the hinges. High quality tents use heavy duty gas struts and locking mechanisms to stay open securely, allowing you to settle in with confidence that the structure is built to handle the conditions.

Yes, most hard shell rooftop tents support the mounting of solar panels. This is a practical way to use otherwise wasted roof space to charge your auxiliary battery while you are parked at camp or driving between locations. Using a slimline panel helps keep your overall height low while still providing enough energy to run your fridge or lights.

Using the correct mounting hardware helps keep the panel secure on corrugated tracks. Because the tent is elevated, you often get a clear view of the sun without shading from your vehicle. To complete your setup, explore our range of 12V solar panels and solar controllers to manage the incoming charge effectively.

To prevent mold and damage, you must allow the tent to dry completely before storing it. If you have to pack up in the rain, open the tent at home as soon as possible to let the moisture escape. Mold can form quickly in damp environments, so air circulation is the best way to protect the canvas and mattress.

Regularly brush away dust and salt with a soft brush and fresh water. Check the mounting bolts and brackets after every trip to keep the connection to your roof racks secure. If you remove the tent from your vehicle, store it in a dry area away from direct sunlight to prevent UV damage to the outer shell.
