Hardkorr 135Ah 12V Deep Cycle Lithium Battery with Bluetooth

You can safely discharge a lithium battery down to zero percent of its capacity, but most manufacturers suggest keeping a 20 percent buffer to maximize its service life. This allows you to use significantly more power compared to traditional lead acid batteries, which should not be pulled below 50 percent.

This deeper discharge capability is a primary advantage of lithium technology for off grid travel. It means a 100Ah lithium battery provides nearly double the usable runtime of an equivalent AGM unit. Because the voltage remains stable throughout the discharge cycle, your fridge and lights will run at full performance until the battery is nearly empty.

A Battery Management System or BMS is the internal brain that monitors every cell to keep the battery operating within safe limits. It manages the charging and discharging process to prevent overcharging, deep discharge, and short circuits, which helps prevent cell damage.

The BMS also provides temperature protection, cutting the power if the cells become too hot or too cold during use. By balancing the voltage across individual cells, the system helps maintain the capacity and longevity of your battery over thousands of cycles. This invisible protection allows you to focus on your trip while the battery looks after itself.

You must use a charger with a dedicated lithium profile to properly maintain a 12V lithium battery. Standard lead acid chargers often include desulfation or equalisation stages that use high voltage pulses, which can trigger the battery management system to shut down or potentially damage the cells.

A lithium specific charger follows a precise constant current and constant voltage curve that safely restores the battery to its full state of charge. This is critical for making the most of the fast recharge speeds that lithium technology offers. Using the correct charging profile helps maintain the long term health and performance of your investment.

Most lithium batteries are not designed to be mounted under the bonnet because extreme engine bay heat can lead to a significant drop in performance or trigger a safety shutdown. Lithium cells are sensitive to high temperatures, and the heat soak from a modern turbo diesel engine often exceeds the safe operating limits of a standard battery.

For the best results, mount your lithium battery in a cooler location such as a canopy, a custom drawer system, or behind a rear seat. If you must mount one in the engine bay, you must choose a unit specifically engineered and rated for under bonnet use. This protects your power system from heat damage and helps you stay powered during long outback hauls.
