FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

AC-DC charger vs DC-DC charger: What is the difference?

The primary difference is the power source used to charge your battery. An AC-DC charger, often called a workshop or bench charger, plugs into a standard 240V wall socket to restore your battery from mains power or a generator. A DC-DC charger is a vehicle-mounted unit that draws power from your alternator while you drive to charge a secondary battery.

Most travelers use an AC-DC charger at home to prep their system before a trip or when pulling into a powered campsite for a solid top-up. A DC-DC charger is for those who spend more time off the grid and need to replace the energy used by their fridge and lights while moving between campsites. Both are essential tools for maintaining a healthy and reliable power system.

What size 240V AC charger do I need for a 100Ah battery?

A 10A to 20A charger is the ideal size for a 100Ah battery. This range provides a steady, safe charge that restores the battery capacity without causing excess heat or stress on the internal plates or cells.

Choosing a charger that is too small, such as a 2A or 4A unit, will result in extremely long recharge times that might not reach a full state of charge overnight. If you have a larger battery bank or are using lithium, you can often step up to a 25A or 30A charger for faster recovery. Always check your battery's maximum charge current rating to make sure your hardware is a safe match. This keeps your system ready for the next leg of your journey.

Do I need a specific AC-DC charger for a Lithium (LiFePO4) battery?

Yes, you need a charger with a dedicated lithium profile to protect your investment. Standard chargers for lead acid often include stages like desulfation that use high voltage pulses, which can trigger the battery management system to shut down or potentially damage the cells.

Lithium batteries prefer a specific charge cycle without a float stage that stays too high for too long. Using a compatible AC-DC charger means you reach a full state of charge quickly without risking damage to the internal cells. This specialized care helps you maintain the long service life of your power storage.

Can I leave my 240V AC charger connected to my battery all the time?

Yes, you can leave a modern smart AC-DC Charger connected indefinitely. These units are designed to monitor the battery and automatically switch to a maintenance or float mode once the full state of charge is reached. This process prevents overcharging and protects the internal plates from damage.

Keeping a charger connected during long storage periods is an effective way to counter natural self-discharge. It ensures your battery is healthy and ready to perform for your next trip, rather than being left to sit flat. This is particularly useful for weekend rigs or seasonal campers that spend time in the garage.
