Hardkorr 250W 12V Portable Solar Blanket with 20A Smart Solar Regulator (Lithium Compatible)

The main difference is the level of flexibility and the materials used for the backing. A solar blanket uses a fabric like material that allows it to be folded down very small and draped over uneven surfaces, such as a vehicle bonnet or a windscreen.

A solar mat typically has a stiffer, more reinforced backing that gives it more structure. This makes mats better for laying flat on the ground or propping up against gear, while blankets are the preferred choice when space is limited and you need to maximize every available surface. Both offer high efficiency, but the blanket is the ultimate option for compact storage and versatile placement.

Yes, you can place a solar blanket over your car windscreen to charge your batteries while keeping the cabin cool. This is a popular technique for quick stops or afternoon breaks because it blocks direct sunlight from heating up the dashboard and interior.

Using the windscreen as a mounting point helps you catch the sun at a better angle during the middle of the day without needing to unpack a full ground setup. Most blankets are soft enough not to scratch the glass or paintwork, and you can easily secure them using your vehicle sun visors. This keeps your fridge and accessories running while protecting your cabin from extreme heat.

Managing this input requires a dedicated regulator to protect your system. Explore our Solar Controllers to find a suitable match, or see our high efficiency MPPT Solar Controllers for better performance in mixed light.

Solar blankets are water resistant and can handle light rain or morning dew, but they are not fully waterproof. The solar cells are protected by a durable layer like ETFE, yet the fabric backing and the electrical connections can absorb water if left in a heavy downpour or sitting in puddles.

It is best to bring your blanket inside or undercover if you expect significant rain. Water ingress into the junction box or the solar controller can lead to corrosion and system failure. Keeping the connections dry is the key to maintaining the longevity of your gear while traveling in humid or coastal environments.

Protecting your charge is critical for your storage. See our 12V Batteries for dependable power storage, or check our Battery Monitors to track your charge status during wet weather.

Clean your solar blanket using a soft damp cloth and mild soap to remove dust and salt residue. Avoid using abrasive sponges, harsh chemicals, or high pressure water, as these can damage the protective coating on the solar cells.

Always make sure the blanket is completely dry before folding it for storage. Storing a damp blanket in its carry bag can lead to mold and mildew buildup, which may damage the fabric backing over time. Checking the connectors for dirt or red dust before packing away will help maintain a strong electrical connection for your next trip.

Following these simple steps will help your portable solar setup stay in good condition for years of travel.
