FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I wire two 12V batteries in parallel using battery cables?

Parallel wiring involves connecting the positive terminal of the first battery to the positive terminal of the second, and doing the same for the negative terminals. This configuration keeps the system voltage at 12 volts while doubling your total storage capacity in amp hours.

Using batteries of the same age, brand, and chemistry is a smart move to prevent the newer battery from discharging into the older one. Thicker cabling is preferred for these links to handle the increased current flow that a larger bank produces. This setup is a practical way to extend your off grid stay without changing your 12V appliances.

Explore our AGM Deep Cycle Batteries to find matching units, or see our Battery Cable for heavy gauge wiring options.

Do parallel battery cables need to be the exact same length?

Yes, the cables linking your batteries must be the exact same length and gauge. Because electrical resistance increases with cable length, even a small difference can cause the batteries to charge and discharge at different rates.

If one path is shorter, the battery connected to it will work harder and fail sooner than the others in the bank. Keeping your links identical helps balance the load across every cell, which preserves the service life of your entire power system. This simple step is a vital part of building a professional and balanced 12V setup.

Browse our Battery Cable to find the right gauge for your parallel links.

How do I connect a load to batteries wired in parallel?

You should connect your main positive lead to the first battery in the bank and your main negative lead to the last battery. This diagonal connection method forces the current to travel through every battery in the parallel group equally.

Connecting both leads to a single battery in the bank often leads to that specific battery doing most of the work while the others sit idle. A balanced draw helps maintain battery health and capacity, especially when you are running high load appliances. This approach allows your entire bank to act as one single, powerful unit.

Check out our Battery Monitors & Shunts to track this balance, or see our 12V Pure Sinewave Inverters for high draw connections.
