Product Information

Product Description

When you need the largest possible shelter with a seamless connection to your rooftop tent, the Outback Tourer 270 PLUS delivers. Its foundation is a fully welded backplate and frame, a design that eliminates the weak, riveted joints found on other awnings and creates a single, incredibly strong unit. That frame supports a massive 13.8 square meters of premium poly cotton ripstop canvas, a true all weather fabric with a 3000mm waterproof rating. A unique D shaped zipper panel allows for a completely dry, covered entry into a compatible rooftop tent, creating a fully integrated living space.

While it's completely freestanding for a quick setup, three integrated, hinged legs can be deployed for rock solid stability in windy conditions. The PLUS comes loaded with features, including six dual colour LED light strips to illuminate your entire camp. For serious adventurers who need maximum space, strength, and integration, this is the top of the line.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

True freestanding vs pole-dependent 270 awnings: Which is better?

True freestanding awnings are the better choice for travelers who prioritize setup speed and a cleaner campsite. These units use reinforced internal arms and heavy duty hinges that allow the frame to hold its own weight without support legs in calm conditions. Pole dependent models are a lighter and often more affordable alternative, but they require you to deploy and peg down the legs every time you open the canvas.

While freestanding models offer the ultimate convenience for quick roadside stops, they still include poles for use when the weather turns. The extra strength in a freestanding frame makes it more resilient against sudden gusts before you can get the straps in place. This makes them a popular choice for serious touring rigs where efficiency is a priority.

Selecting the right hardware is vital for these heavier units. Explore our Awning Mounting Brackets to find high strength fixings for your rig.

Does a 270 degree awning clear a lift up rear tailgate?

Yes, a 270 degree awning can clear a lift up rear tailgate if the mounting height is set correctly. You must position the awning high enough on your roof rack or canopy so the rear arm does not strike the door when it reaches its full extension. This is a common consideration for wagon owners who cook or access gear from the back of the vehicle.

Using height adjustable brackets or mounting the awning to a tall hard shell tent are practical ways to gain the necessary clearance. You should also check the swing path of the tailgate to ensure it does not pinch the canvas when fully open. This setup creates a seamless sheltered workspace from the side of your vehicle all the way around to the rear.

Many travelers integrate their awnings with their sleeping quarters. Browse our Rooftop Tents to see how these systems work together.

Are freestanding 270 degree awnings safe in high winds?

Freestanding 270 degree awnings are not safe in high winds without the use of support poles and tie down straps. The massive surface area of a wrap around awning creates significant leverage that can bend mounting brackets or damage your vehicle roof if a gust catches the canvas. Even the strongest frames are vulnerable to being flipped if they are not secured to the ground.

It is a smart habit to deploy the included poles and peg them down as soon as you set up camp. This proactive approach protects your investment and prevents your trip from being cut short by gear failure. For extra stability in breezy conditions, adding windbreaks can help reduce the pressure on the frame.

How do I stop rain from pooling on my 270-degree awning?

Prevent rain from pooling by adjusting the height of your support poles to create a steep angle for water runoff. Most 270 degree awnings feature adjustable legs that allow you to drop one or two sections lower than the others. This creates a natural fall that directs water away from the vehicle and prevents the canvas from stretching under the weight of trapped rain.

Keeping the canvas under tension is also vital. You should use your tie down straps to pull the fabric tight, which helps the water shed before it has a chance to collect. Regularly checking the tension during a downpour helps maintain the shape of the arms and keeps your cooking area dry.

Illuminating your shelter helps you manage these adjustments at night. Explore our LED Awning Light Kits for integrated campsite lighting.
