Rekcharge 12V Single Cigarette Lighter Socket

Standard 12V cigarette lighter sockets are typically rated for a maximum of 10 to 15 amps. While they are useful for lower draw accessories like phone chargers or small fans, pushing them to their limit for long periods can lead to heat buildup and a potential failure of the internal contacts.

The actual limit often depends on the fuse protecting the circuit and the thickness of the wiring behind the panel. If you plan to run high draw gear consistently, it is safer to use a dedicated heavy duty plug. Using the correct protection prevents damage to your vehicle wiring.

Check your circuit protection in our Fuses & Fuse Holders collection or see our Power Distribution Boxes to organize your circuits.

You can run a 12V fridge from a cigarette lighter socket, but it is not the most stable connection for off road travel. These sockets rely on a friction fit that can easily vibrate loose on corrugated tracks, which often leads to a loss of power and spoiled food.

Cigarette sockets also have higher internal resistance, which causes a significant voltage drop. This can trick your fridge low voltage cutout into thinking the battery is flat when it is not. For a more secure and efficient setup, upgrading to a locking connection is a smart move.

To run a socket to the boot of a standard wagon or 4WD, you should use a minimum of 6mm automotive wire. This gauge helps minimize voltage drop over the four to five metre distance from your battery to the rear of the vehicle.

If you plan to run a fridge or a small inverter from that rear socket, stepping up to 8 B and S is a better choice. Using thicker copper makes certain your accessories receive the full voltage needed to operate efficiently. This is particularly important for gear that stays active while you are parked.

Standard 12V cigarette sockets are not waterproof and are generally designed for internal use. If they are mounted externally without protection, rain and dust will quickly lead to corrosion on the internal terminals, causing a poor electrical connection or a short circuit.

For exterior applications, you should use a socket fitted with a tight sealing rubber cap and mount it in a protected area like a canopy or a storage box. This helps shield the terminals from salt air and red dust while you are traveling. Keeping your connections dry is the most effective way to maintain a functional 12V setup.
