FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a solar cable entry gland and do I need one?

A solar cable entry gland is a weather resistant housing that allows electrical cables to pass through the roof of a caravan or vehicle without letting in rain or dust. You need one for any permanent solar installation where the wiring must enter the cabin or canopy from the outside.

The gland is bonded to the roof surface using a structural adhesive to create a watertight seal. This protects your interior from leaks and shields the cables from sharp metal edges that could cause a short circuit over time. It provides a professional and durable finish for your off grid wiring.

Find the right hardware in our Solar Panel Mounting Brackets collection or see our full range of 12V Solar Panels.

Double vs single cable entry gland: Which is better for a caravan?

A double cable entry gland is usually the better choice for a caravan solar setup. Because solar panels require both a positive and a negative lead, a double gland allows you to route both wires through a single sealed point on your roof.

Single glands are better suited for individual accessory wires or antennas. Using a double unit is a more efficient and tidy way to manage your solar array, as it reduces the number of holes needed and simplifies the bonding process. This keeps your installation compact and minimizes the risk of water ingress.

Are ABS plastic solar cable glands UV resistant?

Yes, our ABS plastic cable glands are constructed from high grade, UV resistant materials designed for the harsh Australian climate. This prevents the housing from becoming brittle, cracking, or fading after years of exposure to direct sunlight on a vehicle roof.

Maintaining a watertight seal depends on the material staying flexible and strong. These glands are engineered to handle extreme heat and coastal salt air, which helps protect your interior from leaks over long term travel. Using UV stable components is a vital part of a professional off grid build.
