About Solar
There's a moment, usually a few days into a trip, when you catch yourself working out where the shade will fall at three in the afternoon before you decide where to park. Nobody teaches you that. Solar does, quietly, over a couple of trips, until reading the sky becomes part of arriving somewhere.
It's worth sitting with what that shift means. Most of what you bolt to a vehicle earns its keep while you're moving. Solar works the other way around. It pays you back for stopping, and it pays more the longer you stay, which is a welcome inversion when almost everything else about touring rewards pressing on to the next place.
Roam Gear's solar range sits across that whole spread. The real question is rarely wattage. It's whether you'd rather the panel work without being touched, or go where you point it. A fixed camping solar panel on a caravan roof answers the first. Portable solar panels and solar blankets answer the second, and they're the reason you can take the shaded site in January and still come out ahead by dinner.
The regulator, the mounts and the cable get less attention and decide more. Undersized cable over a long run is the classic one. At best it quietly hands back a slice of what the panel made, and no invoice ever arrives to tell you. At worst it runs hot, which is why cable is checked against the current and the equipment ratings, not just the voltage drop. Matched properly, the whole system disappears into the background of the trip. Matched poorly, it becomes something you check every morning, which is the opposite of what you bought it for.
Get it right and the habit comes back around. You'll still be reading the sky at three in the afternoon. The difference is you'll be doing it because you've decided the rest of the day is better spent right here.
