About Trickle Charge Solar Panels

Every other panel in this range earns its keep while you are away. This one earns it while nothing is happening at all.

A parked vehicle is never really at rest. Alarms, trackers, radio memory and the body control module all draw a small constant current, and over a few weeks that quiet drain is enough to pull a healthy battery down to where it will not crank. Boats and campers that come out twice a year get it worst, because nobody is there to notice.

A trickle panel offsets that draw. Somewhere between 5W and 20W usually covers it and holds the battery at rest voltage, which is where a battery wants to sit if you want it to last. It costs a fraction of the AGM it saves.

Two things to check. Whether the panel includes a regulator or only a blocking diode, because on anything above about 10W you want a proper regulator in the circuit. And whether it suits the chemistry you are running, since lithium wants a different profile to lead acid regardless of how small the panel is.

Fit one and the vehicle simply starts when you go back to it. Which is the entire point.

FAQs

Trickle Charge Solar Panels FAQs

Will a solar trickle charger revive a completely dead car battery?

A solar trickle charger is generally not designed to revive a completely dead battery. These small panels provide a low amperage output intended to maintain a healthy battery at its full state of charge, countering the natural self discharge that happens when a vehicle sits idle for long periods.

If a battery has dropped below a certain voltage threshold, the plates may already be damaged or sulfated, requiring a high current pulse from a dedicated workshop charger to potentially recover. Using a small maintenance panel on a flat battery will likely result in a charge rate too slow to overcome the internal resistance.

To find a power source better suited for recovery, explore our 12V Batteries or check our selection of high performance Battery Chargers.

Are solar trickle chargers compatible with Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries?

Yes, solar trickle chargers are compatible with Lithium batteries as long as the panel output aligns with the battery's required charge profile. Many smaller maintenance panels produce a steady voltage that falls within the safe range for Lithium Iron Phosphate cells.

It is important to check if the charger has a dedicated lithium setting or if the battery management system can regulate the incoming power. Using a panel that is too large without a regulator can cause overcharging, even on a lithium setup. This method of charging is a practical way to maintain your house battery during long periods of storage or between weekend trips.

Explore our range of Lithium Batteries to see compatible storage options, or find a suitable regulator in our Solar Controllers collection.

Do I need a solar controller or regulator for a small trickle charge solar panel?

A solar regulator is required if the panel output exceeds roughly 10 watts. Even small trickle chargers can push a battery above safe voltage levels if they are left connected for several days, which can lead to gassing in lead acid batteries or cell damage in other chemistries.

The regulator acts as a safety barrier by cutting the power once the battery reaches its full state of charge. This is particularly important for AGM or gel batteries that are sensitive to overcharging during long periods of storage. While some batteries have internal protection, an external controller provides a clear way to manage the incoming power and maintain battery health over time.

The Hardkorr 15W trickle charger we stock comes with an 8A waterproof controller, so it's ready to connect. For a bigger panel, find a regulator in our Solar Controllers range.

Can I leave a solar trickle charger connected all the time?

Yes, you can leave a solar trickle charger connected all the time, provided your setup includes a solar controller to prevent overcharging. The regulator will automatically stop the flow of power once the battery reaches its full state of charge, then maintain it at a safe float level indefinitely.

Leaving a small panel connected without a regulator is risky for long term storage. Over weeks of exposure to the sun, an unregulated panel can push the battery voltage too high, which leads to fluid loss in lead acid batteries or heat damage in sealed units. As long as your charge is managed, this is the most effective way to keep your starting or house battery healthy and ready for your next trip.
